What supplements help energize and balance the effects of stress and aging?

Here’s another question (from a savvy Girlgetstrong member) that I asked on my recent tour of Nutrilite’s Center for Optimal Health. Nutrilite is the world’s leading supplement maker, and they also have a world-class research department. They’ve been letting me pick the the brain of Nutrilite nutrition expert Kerry Grann, who has been graciously answering our questions (such as this recent one on vegetables for vegetable haters, or this one on caffeine).
What is your top recommendation for supplements for a 40+ year old busy woman to help energize and balance the effects of stress and aging?
KG: Even with the best of intentions, it is difficult to always eat a healthy balanced diet for optimal health. Supplementation can help bridge any potential nutrient gaps to keep you feeling your best. It is recommended that all adults consume a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement. This recommendation is based on an extensive review of the scientific literature and is meant to ensure that everyone consumes at least the minimum recommended nutrient level to maintain health, including the energizing B vitamins.
A good quality fish oil supplement makes a great anti-aging addition and helps promote a healthy mind, heart, and skin. Also, most women should take a calcium supplement that contains vitamin D. We know calcium is essential for keeping our bones strong and now there is a lot of great research to support taking vitamin D. It helps our body absorb calcium. Also, a lot of people have low levels of vitamin D in their body which can really be an energy zapper.
I take a multivitamin and additional vitamin D myself because here in Vancouver we don’t see enough sun through the winter months. I’ll also be checking my multivitamin’s bottle to see if it has calcium, and if so, how much. I need to make sure I have enough calcium as I’ve already found out I’m at a medium risk for osteoporosis. I’d like to slow/ minimize that risk.
Ladies, no matter what your age, check your diet and make sure you are getting enough (and enough variety) of vegetables and fruit – if you don’t, you should consider taking a daily multivitamin. Another great way to sneak some nutrients into your system at breakfast is to make a quick and easy green monster smoothie.
