Focus on Relationships: Seize each Opportunity

Last Thursday, my husband suddenly said to me, “Tomorrow’s Good Friday!”
I looked at him blankly as if to say…”Yes…? Your point being?”
“I’m on vacation tomorrow but the kids are not. Let’s drive out to wine country for the day.”
My immediate reaction was to decline his spur-of-the-moment suggestion with one of my usual excuses — I have work deadlines, the kids get back from school at 4 pm, I need to wash the car…! But something about his manner took me back to the fun and impromptu nature of our relationship before our kids showed up. Much as we love our family life, I ate to admit that spontaneity has long become a thing of the past.
I took stock of the situation — the kids were in school most of the day, my babysitter would pick them up; I could do a bunch of work that night to free up time for the next day; we’d be back by evening anyway. I needed no further convincing!
The sun shone on more than the beautiful wine country terrain we traversed that day, or the bistro where we ate lunch. It threw light on the fact that as parents, we don’t need to wait until our kids are in college to enjoy life again as a couple. All we need to really do is seize the opportunity when it comes our way. No fuss, no guilt.
Isn’t it the least we can do to nurture the health of of our relationships?
