No more therapy

This past Thursday was Meechi's last day of therapy. He is now completely done with OT. On his re-eval Claire commented that there were a few things he could still work on, but overall he was right where he should be. His fine motor skills are pretty close to being on target for his age. His "gravitational aversion" has seriously decreased. He no longer has complete freak outs when he is lifted off the ground or is standing on something like a chair or bench. He's not completely over this, but has made tremendous improvement. (by the way... i can not find ANY info on this type of aversion on the web, so i may have to write something up myself because i KNOW my son is not the only child that suffers from this) Claire stated that based on this eval she doesn't recommend any more services. She does want me to still work with him on some things involving his sensory issues (which i fully intended to do anyway) and she believes he will get the fine motor work he needs at preschool. I believe he will as well, this new school seems to put a lot of focus on that. Yay! So now, Meechi is no longer in PT or OT as his therapists for both felt he was within his age range on nearly all factors.

He is also done with private speech therapy. This is not something he is caught up on. He really does still need to have speech. It was a personal decision to stop the private speech for now. He will be getting speech therapy at school and for now I feel that will be enough. I didn't really feel like he was getting a lot out of the 30 mins, once a week sessions he was having anyway. His scholarship from Children's Miracle Network that was paying for his speech has run out, and insurance (because they are evil) will not pay for it. Add the financial aspect of having to pay out of pocket to the fact that I didn't feel he was getting much out of it and well, there you have the decision to stop for now. I do feel he will be getting good help this year at the new school with his speech. The old school treated him like a baby, and this one is so much better at treating him like the preschooler he is! I may decide next summer to start private speech therapy again. We will see.

As an example of how much progress Meechi has made since he started therapy, I am adding some photographic evidence. :) When he first started therapy, his motor planning skills were at the point that he could not figure out how to climb one of these small children's slides. As you can see, he has mastered that now. (and ya, i know that is a sandbox but he likes to use it as a pool)

More impressive is that he has mastered the regular slide. Not only does he have the motor planning skills and gross motor skills to do this, but he has also conquered that fear of being off the ground. He never would have even tried this a few months ago.

I am so incredibly proud of my son and all that he has accomplished in the past 10 months!
