Anyone here have a chil(ren) diagnosed with a disability? I'm a mom to 7, my youngest (6) is on the autism specturm (PDD-Nos) and my 3rd child has ADD, ODD and OCD.
Hi supermom! My oldest was diagnosed with ADD, OCD and a few other things...turns out, she is dyslexic and dealing with that really cleared up a lot of other issues.
There's a great Yahoo group that has helped me get beyond a label and enjoy their uniqueness rather than stress about the challenges. This group is for LD/right brained/creative learners, but the moderator also has another group for autistic kids like she has.
I'm dyslexic and so is my oldest daughter - as with autism, dyslexia comes in degrees, and both my daughter and I have a mild form. I was taught to read through whole language and never felt like it was a disability until my daughter entered school.
She was put in the slow reader program and gave the teacher a lot of trouble. The teacher came to me and said, your daughter can read I don't know why she doesn't. She refused to say my daughter was dyslexic because she could read she just stalled out at a certain level. I told the teacher, I'm dyslexic I recognize it in my daughter stop shoving phonics down her throat she'll start reading.
I was an English major in college and wrote a paper on how phonics is NOT for everyone. Sure enough on the whole language reading program, my daughter was up to grade level reading in 6 months.
ahh dyslexia...I am Hosking's twin and my youngest is dyslexic...the problem with that is many schools won't go for that diagnosis...
it takes a neurologist to get an official diagnosis and schools don't want to pay for that...
My eldest is in the gifted program and my youngest is dyslexic...between the two I am really on my toes when it comes to school...but having a background in education really helps.
