First, progress is NOT linear!! And in my humble opinion, it's not a bad thing to let them have a comfort object. I have three children ten and under, and my position on this has relaxed considerably with each child. Taking away a lovey (especially when they can't have YOU) makes no sense to the child; they have no sense of what's socially acceptable, and that is what it's often about, when you boil it down. Even if it isn't, what are you teaching the child? How to fall asleep unaided? I don't know about you, but I still need my pillows, loved one, and special spot in the bed to fall asleep.

Here's another perspective and perhaps a more logical reason to allow the binky: when my middle child was critically ill as a newborn, the pediatrician told us, "Every minute he has that binky in his mouth, he isn't putting his hands all over every surface and then putting THEM in his mouth. It's his best protection." That is allll I needed to hear!

You are a good mother. Follow your instincts, even when others have strong opinions, or say that they raised seventeen children their way who are all Nobel Laureates, but it will not hurt a bit to let them have it. It's a long life, and this is a short period in which they need that comfort.
